Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1 cup Panko or breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1/2 cup thinly sliced green onions

Sauce

  • 2/3 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger

Optional Garnish

  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • Sliced scallions (green onions)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the meatballs.
  2. Mix Meatball Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, sesame oil, panko breadcrumbs, ground ginger, eggs, minced garlic, and thinly sliced green onions. Mix until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  3. Shape Meatballs: Form the mixture into approximately 1.5-inch meatballs, yielding about 35 pieces. Place them evenly spaced on a greased baking sheet or in a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  4. Bake Meatballs: Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until they are golden on the outside and cooked through with no pink remaining inside.
  5. Prepare Sauce: While the meatballs bake, whisk together the hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, and ground ginger in a bowl until well blended.
  6. Coat Meatballs: Once baked, either dip each meatball individually into the sauce using a toothpick or pour the sauce over the meatballs in the baking dish and gently stir to coat evenly.
  7. Serve: Serve the sauced meatballs warm, garnished with toasted sesame seeds and sliced scallions if desired for added flavor and presentation.

Notes

  • You can adjust the size of meatballs to your preference, but note that smaller ones will yield more pieces and cook faster.
  • Use fresh ground beef for the best texture and flavor.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute Panko breadcrumbs with gluten-free crumbs and use gluten-free soy sauce.
  • These meatballs can be made ahead and reheated; the sauce can also be warmed on the stovetop before mixing.
  • Serve with steamed rice or noodles to complete the Asian-inspired meal.
