These flavorful Salmon Patties are made from canned wild-caught pink salmon, combined with simple ingredients like onion, lemon juice, and breadcrumbs, then pan-fried to golden perfection. Perfect for a quick and nutritious meal, these patties are crispy on the outside and tender inside, delivering a satisfying taste of the sea in every bite.

Ingredients

Salmon Patties

  • 3 x 5 oz. cans skinless, boneless wild-caught pink salmon
  • ¼ cup finely diced onion
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 5 Tbsp plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • ⅓ cup cooking oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the salmon: Drain the liquid from the canned salmon and place the salmon into a large mixing bowl. Break up the salmon into smaller pieces using a fork. If you are using salmon with skin and bones, make sure to remove all skin and bones before starting.
  2. Mix ingredients: Add the finely diced onion, salt, black pepper, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, and lemon juice to the salmon. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly combined.
  3. Form patties: Using your hands, shape the salmon mixture into 6 to 7 large patties, each holding approximately 3-4 tablespoons of mixture. Set the formed patties aside on a plate.
  4. Heat the oil: Warm ⅓ cup of cooking oil in a cast iron skillet over medium heat until hot but not smoking, preparing for frying the patties.
  5. Cook patties: Fry the patties in the skillet in two batches, cooking each side for about 3 minutes or until they develop a golden brown crust. Carefully flip the patties to prevent them from breaking apart, ensuring even and gentle handling on the second side.
  6. Rest and serve: Once cooked, transfer the salmon patties to a wire rack to drain excess oil and maintain crispiness. Serve hot with optional lemon wedges and your choice of side dishes.

Notes

  • Ensure the salmon is well-drained to prevent soggy patties.
  • Use a cast iron skillet or a heavy-bottomed pan for even frying and better crust development.
  • If preferred, substitute breadcrumbs with gluten-free alternatives for dietary needs.
  • Handle patties gently during flipping to keep them intact.
  • Serving with lemon wedges adds a fresh, tangy flavor.
