This classic Philly Cheesesteak recipe features tender shaved beef steak sautéed with fresh bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms, all melted together with provolone cheese and served on toasted hoagie rolls. A quick and flavorful meal perfect for satisfying sandwich cravings in just 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Vegetables

  • 8 oz. baby bella mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 yellow onion, sliced

Meat

  • 12-14 oz. shaved beef steak

Dairy

  • 4 Tbsp butter (divided)
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Other

  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil (divided)
  • ¾ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 5 hoagie rolls

Instructions

  1. Prep the veggies: Slice the green bell pepper, yellow onion, and baby bella mushrooms into thin strips, preparing them for sautéing.
  2. Sauté the mushrooms: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of cooking oil. Once hot, add the sliced mushrooms and cook for 2-3 minutes until they begin to soften.
  3. Soften the peppers and onions: Add the sliced onions and bell peppers to the skillet with the mushrooms. Stir and cook for an additional 3 minutes until the vegetables soften. Remove all the cooked vegetables from the skillet and set aside on a plate.
  4. Cook the beef: In the same skillet, add 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of cooking oil. Add the shaved beef steak and cook until browned and fully cooked through, about 3-4 minutes.
  5. Combine ingredients: Return the sautéed peppers, onions, and mushrooms to the skillet with the beef. Season with salt, garlic powder, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir everything together and cook for 1-2 minutes to rehear the vegetables and blend flavors.
  6. Melt the cheese: Layer the provolone cheese slices evenly on top of the beef and vegetable mixture in the skillet. Turn off the heat and allow the residual warmth to melt the cheese completely.
  7. Toast the hoagie rolls: While the cheese melts, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the remaining 2 tablespoons of softened butter inside the hoagie rolls. Place the rolls on a baking sheet and toast them in the oven for a few minutes until golden brown, keeping a close eye to avoid burning.
  8. Assemble the sandwiches: Evenly fill each toasted hoagie roll with the cheesy beef and vegetable mixture. Serve immediately with optional toppings like mayonnaise, shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, or jalapeños. Enjoy your Philly Cheesesteak!
