This classic Patty Melt recipe features caramelized onions, flavorful ground beef patties, and melted Swiss or cheddar cheese layered between slices of toasted rye or sourdough bread. Cooked on the stovetop to achieve a crispy golden crust and gooey melted cheese, this sandwich combines the best elements of a burger and grilled cheese for a comforting and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Onions

  • 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for cooking onions)

Burgers

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for cooking burgers)

Sandwich Assembly

  • 8 slices bread (rye or sourdough)
  • 8 slices Swiss or cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter (divided for toasting sandwiches)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: Add 1 tablespoon of butter to a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are browned and slightly caramelized, about 15 minutes. Remove onions from the pan and set aside.
  2. Prepare Burger Patties: Shape the ground beef into 4 thin oval-shaped patties, approximately matching the shape and size of the bread slices. Season both sides of each patty with salt and pepper.
  3. Cook Burger Patties: Add 1 tablespoon of butter to the same sauté pan and increase heat to medium-high. Place the burger patties in the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until cooked to your desired doneness. Remove patties from the pan and set aside.
  4. Assemble Sandwiches: On one slice of bread, layer one slice of cheese, one cooked burger patty, 1/4 of the caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and finally top with another slice of bread. Repeat this assembly for all four sandwiches.
  5. Toast Sandwiches – First Side: Wipe out the sauté pan and melt 1/2 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Place two sandwiches in the pan at a time and cook for 2-3 minutes on the first side until a dark golden brown crust forms and cheese begins to melt. Press gently with a spatula to compress the sandwich and ensure even toasting.
  6. Toast Sandwiches – Second Side: Carefully flip the sandwiches, melt another 1/2 tablespoon of butter, and cook the second side for 2-3 minutes until also golden brown and cheese is fully melted. Press gently again for even cooking.
  7. Cook Remaining Sandwiches: Repeat the toasting process with the remaining two sandwiches using the last tablespoon of butter.
  8. Serve: Slice each patty melt in half, serve immediately, and enjoy the warm, melty, and flavorful classic sandwich.

Notes

  • To enhance the flavor, you can add a dash of Worcestershire sauce to the ground beef before forming patties.
  • Use rye bread for a more traditional flavor, or sourdough for a milder taste.
  • Caramelizing onions slowly over medium heat brings out their sweetness, so don’t rush this step.
  • Pressing the sandwich gently while cooking helps meld the ingredients together and creates an even crust on the bread.
  • For a lighter version, use leaner ground beef or cheese with reduced fat.
