This honey garlic soy glazed salmon recipe offers a perfect balance of savory and sweet flavors in a simple 5-ingredient glaze. The salmon is marinated briefly, then baked to tender perfection and finished with a reduced glaze drizzle. Ready in just 35 minutes, it’s an easy, elegant meal ideal for weeknights or special occasions.

Ingredients

Salmon

  • 4 salmon fillets, about 6 ounces (170g) each

Glaze

  • 1/3 cup (80ml) reduced sodium soy sauce (or regular soy sauce)
  • 1/3 cup (113g/80ml) honey
  • 1 Tablespoon (15ml) sesame oil (or olive oil)
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced (or 2 teaspoons jarred/minced garlic)
  • 1 teaspoon peeled minced fresh ginger

Optional Garnish

  • Chopped green onion
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Salmon: Place the salmon fillets into a large zippered food storage bag or a shallow dish. In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, minced garlic, and minced ginger. Pour about half of this glaze mixture over the salmon, making sure to coat each fillet thoroughly. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes and up to 4 hours to allow the flavors to meld.
  2. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: While the salmon marinates, preheat your oven to 375°F (191°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil, parchment paper, or a silicone baking mat for easy cleanup and to prevent sticking. Set the prepared baking sheet aside.
  3. Arrange Salmon and Bake: Remove the salmon from the marinade, placing the fillets skin side down onto the lined baking sheet. Reserve the marinade for making the glaze. Bake the salmon for 15 to 20 minutes, depending on thickness—approximately 10 minutes per inch of thickness—until the salmon is cooked through and an instant-read thermometer inserted in the thickest part reads at least 145°F (63°C). For a crispier edge, switch your oven to broil for the last minute of cooking.
  4. Prepare the Glaze: While the salmon bakes, pour the remaining unused marinade (and optionally, the used marinade as well) into a small saucepan or skillet over medium-high heat. Bring it to a boil, then reduce to medium-low and simmer for 3 to 4 minutes until slightly thickened. Watch closely as it can bubble up and burn quickly. Once thickened, remove the glaze from heat.
  5. Drizzle and Serve: Once the salmon is done baking, drizzle the thickened glaze over the fillets. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds if desired. Serve immediately with your choice of side dishes.
  6. Storage and Reheating: Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to a few days. Reheat gently to preserve the texture and flavor of the salmon.

Notes

  • You can marinate the salmon up to 4 hours ahead, with an optional extended marinating time of up to 8 hours if needed.
  • For best results, use fresh, thawed salmon fillets. If using frozen fillets, ensure they are completely thawed before marinating and cooking.
  • If substituting chicken for salmon, use boneless chicken breasts or thighs. Increase marinating time to around 1 hour and bake until fully cooked through.
  • Serve with steamed broccoli and rice to complete the meal, drizzling extra glaze atop for added flavor.
  • Use an instant-read thermometer to ensure salmon is safely cooked to an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C).
