Crispy oven-baked chicken wings tossed in a sweet, tangy, and smoky honey chipotle sauce, perfect for game days or casual gatherings. These wings combine the heat of chipotle peppers with the natural sweetness of honey and citrusy lime juice for a well-balanced flavor packed with a crispy texture.

Ingredients

Chicken Wings

  • 3 lbs chicken wings (legs and drumsticks split)
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt

Honey Chipotle Sauce

  • 2 chipotle peppers in adobo
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • ¾ cup orange juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (220°C) to prepare for baking the wings.
  2. Prepare Baking Setup: Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire cooling rack on top. Spray the wire rack lightly with cooking oil to prevent sticking.
  3. Season Wings: Place the chicken wings in a large bowl and pat them dry thoroughly with paper towels. Sprinkle baking powder, garlic powder, and salt over the wings, then toss them well to ensure an even coating.
  4. Arrange Wings for Baking: Lay the coated wings in a single layer on the prepared wire rack over the baking sheet. This setup allows air circulation for crispiness.
  5. Bake Wings: Transfer the baking sheet to the oven and bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, flip each wing over and bake for an additional 30 minutes until the wings are golden brown and crispy.
  6. Prepare Sauce: While the wings are baking, add chipotle peppers, garlic cloves, honey, lime juice, and orange juice to a blender. Blend until the mixture is completely smooth.
  7. Simmer Sauce: Pour the blended sauce into a small saucepan. Heat over medium-high heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce reduces by two-thirds and thickens.
  8. Toss Wings in Sauce: Once the wings are cooked, transfer them to a clean large bowl. Pour the hot honey chipotle sauce over the wings and toss gently to coat every piece thoroughly in the flavorful sauce.

Notes

  • The baking powder helps draw moisture out of the skin for extra crispiness—make sure it’s aluminum-free.
  • Patting the wings dry before coating is essential to get a crispy skin.
  • Adjust chipotle peppers to your heat preference; removing the seeds will reduce spiciness.
  • Use fresh lime juice for the best citrus flavor in the sauce.
  • You can broil the wings for an additional 2-3 minutes after baking if you want even crispier skin.
  • Serve immediately after tossing in sauce to maintain crispiness.
