This Homemade Chocolate Cereal (Cocoa Puffs) recipe offers a deliciously simple and healthier alternative to store-bought cocoa cereals. Made with oat flour, cocoa powder, nut or seed butter, and maple syrup, these bite-sized cereal balls are baked to perfection, delivering a naturally sweet and chocolatey breakfast option that’s gluten-free and easily customizable with your favorite nut butters and dairy-free milk.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup oat flour (gluten-free if needed)
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp cocoa powder (or cacao powder)

Wet Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp maple syrup (or any other liquid sweetener)
  • 3 1/2 Tbsp nut/seed butter (of choice, see notes)

Instructions

  1. Mix Wet Ingredients: Combine the nut or seed butter and the maple syrup in a bowl. Stir thoroughly with a spoon until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
  2. Add Dry Ingredients: Add the oat flour and cocoa powder to the wet mixture and stir again to start forming a dough.
  3. Shape the Dough: Use your hands to knead the mixture into a dough ball. Adjust the consistency by adding more maple syrup or nut butter if too dry, or more oat flour, one teaspoon at a time, if too wet.
  4. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 320 °F (160 °C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prepare for baking.
  5. Form Dough Ropes: Divide the dough into four equal parts and roll each into ropes about 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick.
  6. Cut into Pieces: Use a knife to cut the ropes into smaller segments approximately ½ to ¾ inch thick, then roll each segment into small balls with your hands. This process should yield between 120-140 cocoa cereal balls.
  7. Bake the Cereal Balls: Place the balls on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes. The cereal balls will be soft when hot but will firm as they cool. Avoid overbaking to prevent burning.
  8. Cool and Serve: Let the cocoa cereal balls cool completely on the baking sheet. Enjoy them with your favorite dairy-free milk and optional fruit for a wholesome breakfast.

Notes

  • Use gluten-free oat flour if you require a gluten-free diet.
  • Nut or seed butter choice affects flavor and texture—almond, peanut, sunflower seed, or cashew butters all work well.
  • If you prefer sweeter cereal, slightly increase maple syrup but be cautious not to make the dough too wet.
  • Store the baked cocoa puffs in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
  • This cereal pairs wonderfully with almond milk, oat milk, or any plant-based milk of your choice.
