This Healthy BBQ Sauce recipe offers a flavorful, no added sugar alternative to traditional BBQ sauces by using natural sweetness from Medjool dates and a blend of savory spices. Perfect for anyone looking to enjoy rich barbecue flavor without refined sugars, it’s quick to prepare in a blender and keeps well refrigerated for up to two weeks.

Ingredients

Fruit and Veggies

  • ½ cup pitted Medjool dates
  • 15 oz. can diced tomatoes, with juices

Condiments and Vinegars

  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon blackstrap molasses
  • 1 tablespoon spicy brown mustard

Spices and Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt, plus more to taste
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger

Instructions

  1. Blend the Ingredients: Add the pitted dates, canned diced tomatoes with their juices, apple cider vinegar, blackstrap molasses, spicy brown mustard, sea salt, smoked paprika, black pepper, garlic powder, ground cumin, and ground ginger to a high-speed blender. Secure the lid and blend until the dates are fully pulverized and the mixture is smooth, which may take up to 2 minutes. Stop occasionally to scrape down the sides to ensure an even blend.
  2. Adjust Seasonings and Store: Once the mixture is smooth, taste the sauce and adjust as needed. Add an additional date for more sweetness, or a squeeze of mustard for a tangier flavor. Optionally, add a tablespoon of tamari for added salty, umami richness. Transfer the finished sauce to a 16-ounce jar with a lid and refrigerate. The BBQ sauce will keep well in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Notes

  • Using pitted Medjool dates provides natural sweetness with no added sugar.
  • Ensure the blender is high-speed to achieve a smooth, consistent texture.
  • Add tamari for an extra umami boost if desired.
  • This sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 14 days.
