Fresh Strawberry Hibiscus Lemonade is a vibrant and refreshing beverage combining the natural sweetness of ripe strawberries, the tartness of fresh lemon juice, and the floral notes of hibiscus syrup. Perfect for warm days, this homemade lemonade offers a delightful balance of flavors with a hint of floral and citrus zing.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 ½ lbs fresh strawberries, hulled
  • 2 cups fresh lemon juice (about 9-10 lemons)
  • 1 ½ cups dried hibiscus flowers (aka dried sorrel or flor de Jamaica)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 ¾ cups organic cane sugar
  • 4-5 cups water, to finish

Garnish (Optional)

  • Fresh strawberries
  • Fresh mint leaves

Instructions

  1. Prep the strawberry lemon mixture: In the body of a high-speed blender, combine the hulled strawberries and fresh lemon juice. Blitz the mixture until it is well combined and smooth. Carefully pour the mixture into a large pitcher, cover, and set aside.
  2. Make the hibiscus syrup: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the dried hibiscus flowers, 2 cups of water, and organic cane sugar. Stir the mixture well to combine. Let it simmer, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until the sugar is fully dissolved. Remove the pan from heat and allow the mixture to cool for about 20 minutes.
  3. Strain the hibiscus syrup and combine: Use a sieve to strain out the hibiscus flowers, or a slotted utensil to discard them (save some for garnish if desired). Pour the hibiscus syrup into the pitcher with the strawberry lemon mixture.
  4. Add water and adjust sweetness: Add 4 cups of water to the pitcher and stir the lemonade to combine. Taste the lemonade and adjust by adding up to 1 more cup of water if desired, to balance the flavors.
  5. Chill and serve: Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to let the flavors meld. When ready to serve, pour the lemonade over ice-filled glasses and garnish with fresh strawberries, mint leaves, and/or leftover hibiscus flowers if you like. Enjoy the refreshing drink!

Notes

  • Adjust the level of sweetness by adding more or less sugar according to your taste preference.
  • Hibiscus flowers add a natural tartness and beautiful color; you can save some for garnishing drinks.
  • Letting the lemonade chill allows the flavors to fully develop and blend.
  • This beverage is best served cold, especially on hot days.
  • To make it diabetic-friendly, consider substituting organic cane sugar with a natural sweetener like stevia or erythritol.
