This Easy Sesame Chicken recipe delivers a deliciously sticky and flavorful Asian-inspired dish perfect for a quick weeknight dinner. Tender chicken thighs are coated in a light batter, pan-fried to a golden crisp, and then tossed in a savory, sweet sesame sauce. Served over fragrant jasmine rice and topped with fresh green onions, it’s a crowd-pleaser that comes together in just 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Sauce

  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp water
  • 1 Tbsp toasted sesame oil
  • 3 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 Tbsp sesame seeds

Chicken and Coating

  • 1 lb boneless skinless chicken thighs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch black pepper
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil (vegetable or canola oil preferred)

To Serve

  • 4 cups cooked jasmine rice
  • 2 whole green onions, sliced

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, water, toasted sesame oil, brown sugar, rice vinegar, grated fresh ginger, minced garlic, cornstarch, and sesame seeds. Set aside to allow flavors to meld.
  2. Coat the chicken: In a large bowl, whisk the egg with 2 tablespoons cornstarch, salt, and pepper. Trim any excess fat from chicken thighs and cut into 1-inch pieces. Toss the chicken pieces in the egg mixture, ensuring they are evenly coated.
  3. Heat the skillet: Add cooking oil to a large skillet and heat over medium heat until hot. Swirl to coat the entire surface of the skillet with oil.
  4. Cook the chicken: Add the batter-coated chicken pieces in a single layer, allowing them to cook undisturbed until golden brown on the bottom. Carefully flip the chicken pieces, breaking them into smaller clumps as you flip, and cook until golden brown on all sides. Avoid excessive stirring to preserve the coating.
  5. Add the sauce: Pour the prepared sauce over the cooked chicken in the skillet. Toss gently to coat the chicken evenly. Bring the sauce to a simmer, allowing it to thicken while stirring gently. Once thickened, remove from heat.
  6. Serve: Spoon the sesame chicken over cooked jasmine rice and garnish with sliced green onions for a fresh finish. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, do not overcrowd the skillet; cook chicken in batches if necessary.
  • Use boneless skinless chicken thighs for juicier, more flavorful meat compared to breast meat.
  • You can substitute jasmine rice with brown rice or cauliflower rice for a healthier option.
  • If you prefer a spicier kick, add crushed red pepper flakes to the sauce.
  • Grate fresh ginger finely with a microplane or small-holed grater for best texture and flavor.
