Classic French Toast made with thick slices of brioche soaked in a vanilla and cinnamon egg mixture, pan-fried to a golden brown perfection. This easy breakfast favorite is served with maple syrup and powdered sugar for a delicious morning treat.

Ingredients

Custard Mixture

  • 4 large eggs
  • ⅔ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of sea salt

For Cooking

  • Butter or oil, for the pan

For Serving

  • 8 thick slices bread (preferably thick-sliced brioche)
  • Maple syrup, for serving
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the custard mixture: In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla bean paste, cinnamon, and a pinch of sea salt until all ingredients are well combined and smooth.
  2. Heat the pan: Place a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat and brush the surface with butter to prevent sticking and add flavor.
  3. Dip the bread slices: Take each slice of bread and dip it into the egg mixture, turning it to coat both sides thoroughly, allowing the bread to soak up the custard but not become overly saturated.
  4. Cook the French toast: Place the coated bread slices into the preheated skillet and cook each side for about 2 minutes or until a beautiful golden brown color appears. Adjust the heat to low if needed to ensure the bread cooks through without burning.
  5. Cook in batches: Work in batches if your skillet cannot hold all slices at once. Remember to brush the skillet with more butter between batches to maintain a nonstick surface and flavor.
  6. Serve: Arrange the cooked French toast on plates and serve warm with maple syrup and/or a dusting of powdered sugar according to your preference.

Notes

  • Using thick-sliced brioche bread gives the best texture and flavor for French toast.
  • Adjust the cooking heat to avoid burning while ensuring the inside cooks properly.
  • You can substitute vanilla bean paste with vanilla extract if unavailable.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute milk with almond or oat milk and use an oil like coconut oil for cooking.
  • French toast is best served immediately but can be kept warm in a low oven for short periods.
