This quick and easy microwave Chocolate Mug Cake recipe is perfect for a single serving dessert. Made without eggs and featuring melty chocolate chips, it delivers a rich, chocolatey treat in just minutes with minimal cleanup.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour (23 g)
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar (25 g)
  • 1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (7.5 g)
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder (1 g)
  • dash salt (0.5 g)

Wet Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons milk (any kind) (45 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil or melted butter (15 ml)
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla flavoring (0.6 ml)

Add-ins

  • 1 tsp chocolate chips or favorite baking chips (5 g)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mug: Lightly spray the bottom and sides of a microwave-safe mug or coffee cup with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: Add the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt into the mug. Stir the dry ingredients together to combine evenly.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients: Pour in the milk, canola oil (or melted butter), and vanilla flavoring. Stir the mixture thoroughly until smooth, making sure to scrape the bottom of the mug to fully incorporate all ingredients.
  4. Incorporate Chocolate Chips: Stir the chocolate chips into the batter or sprinkle them on top as preferred.
  5. Microwave the Cake: Cook the mug cake in the microwave on high for 70 to 90 seconds. Check the cake; it should be just set but still slightly shiny on top. Because microwaves vary, start with 70 seconds and add more time if needed.
  6. Rest Before Eating: Let the mug cake rest inside the microwave for 1 minute to finish cooking and to cool slightly before enjoying.

Notes

  • Microwave cooking times can vary; start with 70 seconds and add 15-25 seconds if the cake isn’t set.
  • The mug cake should remain soft and moist in the center; it continues to cook slightly as it rests.
  • Add-in ideas include Nutella, peanut butter, coconut flakes, nuts, cinnamon, or flavored chocolate chips such as peanut butter, mint, or butterscotch.
