Delicious and cheesy Arepas con Queso made with masarepa flour, stuffed with fresh mozzarella cheese, and pan-cooked to a golden brown crust. A traditional Venezuelan and Colombian favorite perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a snack, offering a comforting blend of crispy exterior and melty cheese inside.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups masarepa flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons sugar (plus more to taste)

Dairy Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (at room temperature)
  • 1½ cups mozzarella cheese (freshly shredded)
  • ¼ cup whole milk

Other

  • 2½ cups lukewarm water
  • 1 teaspoon nonstick cooking spray (for the skillet)

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry and Cheese Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the masarepa flour, salt, and sugar. Add the room temperature butter and freshly shredded mozzarella cheese. Mix well to incorporate all ingredients evenly.
  2. Add Liquids and Knead Dough: Pour in ¼ cup of whole milk and slowly add the lukewarm water while continuously mixing the dough. Knead the dough until smooth and manageable, adding a little more water if necessary to achieve the right consistency. Let the dough rest for about 5 minutes to hydrate.
  3. Shape the Arepas: Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and roll each into a ball. Flatten each ball into a disc approximately ½ inch thick to form the classic arepa shape.
  4. Cook Arepas on Skillet: Heat a skillet over medium heat and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Place the arepas onto the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes on each side or until each side forms a golden brown crust and the arepas are cooked through.
  5. Cool and Serve: Remove the arepas from the skillet and allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Using lukewarm water helps the dough hydrate better and makes kneading easier.
  • You can adjust the amount of sugar based on your taste preference; traditionally arepas are slightly savory but a touch of sweetness complements the cheese.
  • If the dough feels too dry, add a tablespoon of water at a time until it reaches a pliable consistency.
  • For a crisper crust, cook the arepas a little longer on each side, but be careful not to burn them.
  • Serve with additional cheese or toppings like avocado, butter, or sour cream for extra flavor.
