Ingredients

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes

1/4 teaspoon salt

12 tablespoons ice water (as needed)

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup cornstarch

1/4 teaspoon salt

4 large egg yolks

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 cup heavy cream

2 tablespoons powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crust: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a food processor, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the cold butter cubes and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Slowly add ice water, pulsing until the dough forms. Press dough into a disc, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Roll out and press into a greased 9×9-inch pan. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until golden. Let it cool completely.
  2. Make the Custard Filling: Heat milk over medium heat in a saucepan until warm. In a separate bowl, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Add egg yolks and whisk until smooth. Gradually add the warm milk to the egg mixture while whisking constantly. Return the mixture to the saucepan, whisking until thickened (about 5-7 minutes). Stir in butter and vanilla extract. Pour over the cooled crust and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to set.
  3. Prepare the Whipped Cream Topping: Beat heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract in a chilled bowl until soft peaks form. Once the custard is set, spread the whipped cream evenly over the top. Optionally, sprinkle vanilla or grated chocolate for decoration.
  4. Serve and Enjoy: After the squares have set, cut them into squares and serve. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Notes

For a flavor twist, add caramel or fruit preserves on top of the whipped cream.
