Ingredients

Seafood Filling

  • 1 cup cooked shrimp, chopped
  • 4 oz crab meat, chopped
  • 1/3 cup green onion, finely chopped
  • 4 oz cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 ½ Tbsp parmesan cheese
  • 2 Tbsp fresh dill, finely chopped
  • 1 cup shredded four cheese blend or your favorite cheese

Phyllo Cups

  • 12 phyllo sheets
  • 4 Tbsp butter, melted
  • Baking spray or additional butter for greasing the muffin pan

Instructions

  1. Prepare the muffin pan: Lightly coat a mini muffin pan with baking spray or butter to prevent sticking. Set aside.
  2. Chop seafood and herbs: Finely chop the cooked shrimp and crab meat along with the green onion and fresh dill, ensuring bites are small and evenly sized for the filling.
  3. Mix the filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped shrimp, crab, green onion, dill, cream cheese, mayonnaise, parmesan cheese, and shredded cheese. Stir well until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Season lightly with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Prepare the phyllo squares: Take two phyllo sheets and lay them flat, one on top of the other. Cut the stacked sheets into four strips lengthwise. Then cut each strip into three pieces crosswise, creating 12 phyllo squares in total.
  5. Build the phyllo cups: For each cup, layer three phyllo squares on top of each other, alternating each square’s orientation to form six thin layers total per cup. Carefully place each layered stack into the prepared mini muffin pan, allowing some of the phyllo edges to hang over the sides to form a cup shape.
  6. Butter the phyllo cups: Generously brush the melted butter over each phyllo cup to ensure a crispy and golden texture once baked.
  7. Fill the cups: Spoon the seafood mixture evenly into each phyllo cup, filling them generously but without overflowing.
  8. Bake: Place the muffin pan in a preheated oven set to 355°F (180°C). Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the phyllo cups are golden brown and the cheese has melted and is bubbly.
  9. Serve: Remove from oven, let cool slightly, and serve warm as delicious bite-sized appetizers.

Notes

  • Ensure cream cheese is softened to room temperature for easy mixing.
  • Handle phyllo sheets gently as they are very delicate and tear easily.
  • Use fresh dill for the best flavor, but dried dill can be substituted in a pinch (use about 1 tablespoon).
  • Customize the cheese blend according to your preference; mozzarella or cheddar works well as alternatives.
  • These cups can be prepared ahead to the filling stage and baked just before serving.
  • Serve with a squeeze of lemon or a dollop of cocktail sauce for extra zest.
