Crispy Nutritional Yeast Tofu is a simple, protein-packed vegan dish perfect for a quick snack or a flavorful addition to meals. This recipe uses extra firm tofu coated with a blend of nutritional yeast and spices, then cooked to golden perfection using either an air fryer or an oven. The result is a crunchy, savory treat bursting with umami flavor.

Ingredients

Tofu and Seasoning

  • 1 block (about 14 oz / 400 grams) extra firm tofu
  • 4 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  1. Drain Tofu: Open the package of tofu and drain off any excess water. Do not press or dry it, to retain a bit of moisture for better texture.
  2. Tear Tofu: Using your hands, tear the tofu block into irregular bite-sized chunks and place them in a mixing bowl.
  3. Season Tofu: Add nutritional yeast, cornstarch, sea salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder to the tofu. Toss well to ensure all pieces are evenly coated. Cook immediately without letting the tofu sit for best results.
  4. Air Fry Method: Lightly grease the bottom of your air fryer basket with oil using a brush. Arrange the tofu chunks in a single layer in the basket. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 15 to 20 minutes until tofu is golden brown and super crunchy, shaking or tossing halfway through cooking.
  5. Bake Method: Preheat the oven to 425°F (218°C). Spread the seasoned tofu evenly on a lined baking tray. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, flipping once halfway, until golden and crispy.

Notes

  • Do not press or dry tofu before cooking to maintain a tender inside with a crispy outside.
  • For extra crispiness, ensure tofu pieces are arranged in a single layer without overcrowding.
  • Adjust seasoning amounts to taste or add smoked paprika for a smoky twist.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat in the air fryer or oven for best texture.
