Maple Donut Bars are the perfect blend of a soft, cake-like donut with the rich, sweet flavor of maple syrup. These bars offer all the indulgence of traditional donuts but are easier to make and cut into convenient, bite-sized pieces. Topped with a glossy maple glaze, these donut bars are a deliciously sweet treat, perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a special occasion.

Ingredients

For the donut bars:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

¾ cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk with 1 tablespoon vinegar to sour it)

2 tablespoons maple syrup (for the batter)

For the maple glaze:

1 cup powdered sugar

3 tablespoons maple syrup

1 tablespoon milk (or more for consistency)

½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8×8-inch square baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon (if using).
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk and maple syrup. Start and end with the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the bars cool completely in the pan before glazing.
  7. For the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar, maple syrup, milk, and vanilla extract (if using). Adjust the consistency by adding more milk if the glaze is too thick or more powdered sugar if it’s too thin.
  8. Once the donut bars have cooled, spread the glaze evenly over the top, allowing it to drip down the sides. Let the glaze set for 10-15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

You can add chopped nuts, chocolate chips, or dried fruit to the batter for added texture and flavor.

If you prefer a thicker glaze, add more powdered sugar. For a shinier finish, add a small amount of corn syrup or vegetable oil to the glaze.

These bars can be made ahead of time and stored in an airtight container. Glaze them right before serving.

For a gluten-free version, use a gluten-free flour blend, though the texture may vary slightly.
