This Honey Garlic Chicken Breast recipe features tender, juicy chicken breasts coated in a flavorful honey garlic sauce. Cooked quickly in a skillet, it combines sweet honey, savory soy sauce, tangy vinegar, and aromatic garlic to create a deliciously balanced meal perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 500g / 1 lb chicken breast, boneless and skinless (2 pieces)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup flour

Sauce and Cooking

  • 3 1/2 tbsp (50g) unsalted butter (or 2 1/2 tbsp olive oil)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 1/2 tbsp apple cider vinegar (or white or other clear vinegar)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (light or all purpose)
  • 1/3 cup honey (or maple syrup)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Chicken: Cut the chicken breasts in half horizontally to create 4 thin steaks. Season both sides of each piece generously with salt and pepper to enhance the flavor.
  2. Coat Chicken: Pour the flour into a shallow dish. Dredge each chicken piece in the flour, coating completely, and then shake off excess flour to avoid clumps.
  3. Heat Butter: In a large skillet over high heat, melt most of the butter (about 3 1/2 tbsp minus 1 tsp). Reserve the remaining teaspoon of butter for later use.
  4. Cook Chicken: Place the floured chicken pieces in the skillet and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until the underside is golden brown. Flip the chicken and cook the other side for approximately 1 minute to get a light sear.
  5. Adjust Heat: Reduce the heat slightly to medium-high to prepare for adding the sauce ingredients without burning.
  6. Add Garlic and Butter: Create some space in the skillet, add the minced garlic, and top with the reserved dab of butter. Stir the garlic briefly as the butter melts to enhance aroma and prevent burning.
  7. Add Sauce Ingredients: Pour in the apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and honey. Stir or gently shake the pan to combine the ingredients evenly. Bring the sauce to a simmer and allow it to cook for about 1 minute or until it thickens slightly.
  8. Coat Chicken with Sauce: Turn the chicken pieces in the skillet to evenly coat them with the honey garlic sauce. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a splash of water to loosen it and stir well.
  9. Serve: Remove the skillet from heat immediately to prevent overcooking. Plate the chicken and drizzle any remaining sauce from the pan over the top before serving.

Notes

  • Using apple cider vinegar adds a nice tang but white vinegar can be substituted.
  • The use of flour helps create a light crust on the chicken.
  • Unsalted butter is preferred but olive oil is a good alternative for a different flavor profile.
  • Adjust honey amount to taste for sweetness.
  • Ensure not to overcook chicken to keep it juicy.
