These Homemade Chai Scones with Maple Chai Glaze are the perfect combination of tender, flaky scones with the comforting, spiced flavor of chai and a sweet, rich maple glaze. They’re the perfect treat for breakfast, an afternoon snack, or a special fall dessert.

Ingredients

For the Scones:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground ginger

1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom

1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes

1/2 cup heavy cream

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon brewed chai tea (cooled)

For the Maple Chai Glaze:

1/2 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons maple syrup

1 tablespoon brewed chai tea (cooled)

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Make the Scones: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, spices (cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves), and salt. Add the cold cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, egg, vanilla extract, and brewed chai tea. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir with a fork until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it forms a rough ball. Pat the dough into a circle about 1-inch thick. Using a sharp knife or a bench scraper, cut the dough into 8 wedges and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spaced apart. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until the scones are lightly golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let them cool on a wire rack.
  4. Make the Maple Chai Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, maple syrup, brewed chai tea, and cinnamon until smooth and well combined. Once the scones have cooled slightly, drizzle the glaze over the top of each scone, allowing it to set.

Notes

Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the dough for extra crunch.

Use a little brown sugar instead of granulated sugar for a deeper flavor.

Experiment with different spices or chai blends for a unique twist.
