Perfect for a hearty meal, this recipe features a savory beef broth sauce thickened with cornstarch, enhancing the flavorful filling. Baked to perfection, it’s an easy yet satisfying dish that serves 6.

Ingredients

Beef Mixture

  • 24 ounces lean ground beef
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, grated
  • 1 green pepper, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon steak seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup low sodium beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Sandwich

  • 1 large French bread loaf or choice of bread
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 8-12 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef: In a pan over medium-high heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned and no longer pink, then drain the excess fat.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: Add sliced onion, grated garlic, green pepper, steak seasoning, salt, and pepper to the pan with the beef. Sauté until the vegetables are softened and fragrant.
  3. Prepare Sauce: In a measuring cup, mix the cornstarch with the low sodium beef broth until smooth. Pour this mixture into the beef and vegetable pan. Allow it to simmer for 1-2 minutes to thicken the sauce.
  4. Assemble Sandwich – Bottom: Spread mayonnaise on the bottom half of the bread loaf, then layer with four slices of provolone cheese.
  5. Add Filling and Top Cheese: Spoon the meat and vegetable mixture evenly over the cheese layer. Then, add four more slices of provolone cheese over the meat.
  6. Assemble Sandwich – Top and Bake: Spread mayonnaise on the top half of the bread loaf and place it over the filled bottom half to complete the sandwich. Wrap the entire sandwich tightly in aluminum foil.
  7. Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the wrapped sandwich on a baking sheet and bake for 30-35 minutes until the cheese is melted and the sandwich is heated through.
  8. Serve: Remove from oven, unwrap the foil, slice the sandwich into portions, and serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess grease and keep the sandwich from being too oily.
  • Adjust steak seasoning, salt, and pepper to your taste preference.
  • If you prefer a crispier bread crust, unwrap the foil for the last 5-7 minutes of baking.
  • You can substitute provolone cheese with mozzarella or American cheese if desired.
  • The mayonnaise adds flavor and moisture to the sandwich; do not omit it.
  • Leftover sandwiches can be refrigerated and reheated wrapped in foil for best results.
