This French Onion Gnocchi recipe features tender potato gnocchi cooked in a rich, caramelized onion and beef broth sauce, crowned with melted Gruyère cheese for a comforting, French onion-inspired meal perfect for cozy dinners.

Ingredients

For the Onion Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced (about 2 cups)
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

For the Gnocchi

  • 1 package (16 ounces) potato gnocchi, uncooked
  • 1 ½ cups Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • Parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat the fats and cook onions: In a large oven-safe, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat, warm the olive oil and unsalted butter until the butter melts. Add the thinly sliced yellow onions to the skillet.
  2. Caramelize the onions: Sauté the onions, stirring frequently, for 15–20 minutes until they become very soft and develop a deep caramelized color that enriches the flavor of the dish.
  3. Season the onions: Sprinkle kosher salt, black pepper, and garlic powder over the caramelized onions. Stir well to evenly distribute the seasonings.
  4. Add broth and Worcestershire: Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Stir to scrape up any browned bits from the skillet bottom, then bring everything to a gentle simmer to incorporate all the flavors.
  5. Cook the gnocchi: Reduce the heat to low and add the uncooked potato gnocchi to the skillet. Let them simmer for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gnocchi are tender and fully cooked through.
  6. Add the cheese and broil: Evenly sprinkle the shredded Gruyère over the top of the gnocchi and onions. Transfer the skillet to the oven and place under the broiler for 2–3 minutes until the cheese melts and turns lightly golden brown.
  7. Garnish and serve: Carefully remove the skillet from the oven, garnish with fresh parsley, and serve the French Onion Gnocchi warm for a rich and comforting meal.

Notes

  • Make sure to use an oven-safe skillet for broiling the cheese.
  • Keep a close eye when broiling to avoid burning the Gruyère cheese.
  • For a vegetarian version, substitute vegetable broth and omit Worcestershire sauce or use a vegetarian Worcestershire alternative.
  • Caramelizing onions properly is key to achieving the dish’s rich flavor; take your time in this step.
