Ingredients

Meat and Sauce

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp dried parsley
  • ½ tsp salt
  • pepper, to taste
  • 28 oz marinara sauce
  • ½ cup chicken broth

Cheeses

  • 4 oz mozzarella, shredded or sliced
  • ¼ cup fresh Parmigiano Reggiano, grated

Main Ingredient

  • 24 oz potato gnocchi

Optional

  • Fresh basil, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef: In a large sauté pan over medium heat, cook the ground beef until fully browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain off any excess grease to keep the dish from becoming too oily.
  2. Sauté aromatics and seasonings: Add the olive oil, chopped onion, minced garlic, onion powder, garlic powder, dried oregano, dried parsley, salt, and pepper to the pan. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes until the onions soften and the mixture becomes fragrant.
  3. Add liquids and simmer: Stir in the marinara sauce and chicken broth, mixing thoroughly to combine all the flavors. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let the sauce simmer gently for 20 minutes to deepen the flavors.
  4. Cook the gnocchi: Uncover and stir in the potato gnocchi, making sure they are evenly distributed. Cover the pan again and simmer for an additional 10 minutes. The gnocchi will cook through and absorb the sauce.
  5. Melt the cheese: Stir in the mozzarella cheese until melted and evenly incorporated into the mixture.
  6. Add finishing touch: Sprinkle the grated Parmigiano Reggiano over the top of the gnocchi lasagna for a nutty, savory finish.
  7. Serve and garnish: Dish out the gnocchi lasagna warm and garnish optionally with fresh basil for a burst of color and freshness.

Notes

  • Be sure to drain excess grease from browned beef to prevent a greasy sauce.
  • Use fresh or store-bought marinara sauce depending on your preference and time constraints.
  • Fresh basil adds a lovely fresh note but is optional.
  • If you prefer a vegetarian version, substitute ground beef with plant-based ground meat or mushrooms.
  • For gluten-free, ensure the gnocchi you purchase is gluten-free.
