These easy homemade breadsticks are soft, buttery, and perfect as a side for any meal. Made from simple ingredients and requiring two rises, they bake up golden and delicious in just over two hours. Ideal for family dinners or gatherings, these breadsticks can be brushed with melted butter for extra flavor and served warm straight from the oven.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 1/3 cups warm water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 – 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 Tablespoons oil (or melted butter)

Finishing

  • Butter, for brushing on breadsticks

Instructions

  1. Proof Yeast: Add warm water, yeast, and sugar to the bowl of a stand mixer and stir gently. Rest for 5 minutes until the yeast foams on top, indicating it is active. If no foam appears, the yeast may be inactive and should be replaced. (If using Instant Yeast, simply add with other ingredients and skip this step.)
  2. Combine Ingredients: Add 1 1/2 cups of flour, salt, and vegetable oil to the yeast mixture and mix on medium speed until well combined.
  3. Knead Dough: Add an additional 1 1/2 cups of flour and knead the dough on medium speed. The dough should pull away from the sides of the bowl but remain slightly sticky. If too wet, add up to 1/4 cup more flour as needed. Continue kneading for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Transfer the dough to a large greased bowl and cover it with a dish towel. Let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1.5 hours.
  5. Shape Breadsticks: Punch down the risen dough to release air. Divide the dough into 12 equal parts and roll each piece into a 9-inch rope. Place the shaped breadsticks onto a greased cookie sheet, spaced evenly.
  6. Second Rise: Cover the shaped breadsticks with a dish towel and allow them to rise for another hour until puffy.
  7. Bake: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Bake the breadsticks for 10 to 12 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven, brush the tops with melted butter and transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly.
  8. Storage: Store any leftover breadsticks in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days, or freeze for longer storage.

Notes

  • Make sure the water is warm, not hot, to properly activate the yeast (about 105-110°F).
  • If the dough is too sticky after kneading, add more flour 1 tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is achieved.
  • Letting the dough rise in a warm draft-free area will improve fermentation and texture.
  • Brushing the breadsticks with melted butter enhances flavor and gives a beautiful sheen.
  • For variation, sprinkle garlic powder, parmesan cheese, or herbs on top before baking.
