Ingredients

Beef Patties

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground beef / beef mince
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Caramelized Onions and Mushrooms

  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 250 g (½ lb) mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1-2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

Sandwich Assembly

  • 8 slices bread
  • 2 cups grated cheese (Gruyère and sharp cheddar)
  • Butter for spreading on bread

Instructions

  1. Form Patties: Divide the ground beef into 4 equal balls and flatten each with your palm to roughly match the shape and size of your bread slices.
  2. Season: Generously season both sides of each patty with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  3. Cook Patties: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook each patty for 5-6 minutes per side until deeply golden brown and fully cooked through. Remove patties from the pan and set aside.
  4. Caramelize Vegetables: In the same skillet, melt 1 tablespoon butter. Add the sliced onions and mushrooms and cook on medium-low heat for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deeply caramelized and mushrooms are soft and silky.
  5. Add Worcestershire Sauce: Optionally, add 1-2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce to the onions and mushrooms while cooking to enhance flavor. Adjust heat as needed to prevent burning.
  6. Assemble Sandwiches: Lay out 4 slices of bread, layer each with a cooked beef patty, a generous spoonful of the caramelized onion and mushroom mixture, and a few slices or a handful of grated Gruyère and sharp cheddar cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices.
  7. Butter Bread: Spread butter generously on the outside of each sandwich to promote even browning.
  8. Cook Sandwiches: Place sandwiches in a clean skillet over medium heat. Cook until the bread is golden brown on both sides and the cheese is melted, flipping carefully. Covering the pan with a lid will help melt the cheese faster.
  9. Serve: Remove sandwiches from the skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve hot.

Notes

  • Using a mix of Gruyère and sharp cheddar gives a rich, complex cheese flavor.
  • Take your time caramelizing the onions and mushrooms to develop deep, sweet flavors.
  • Covering the pan while cooking sandwiches helps melt the cheese efficiently.
  • You can substitute bread styles like rye or sourdough for extra flavor.
  • Worcestershire sauce is optional but adds a savory depth to the caramelized veggies.
