Delicious and crunchy Chocolate Chickpeas are a perfect healthy snack that combines the earthiness of chickpeas with rich, melted dark chocolate and a hint of sea salt for a satisfying sweet and savory treat. Crispy air-fried chickpeas are coated in glossy chocolate and frozen to create a bark-like snack that’s easy to enjoy any time.

Ingredients

Chickpeas and Seasoning

  • 15 oz chickpeas (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 Tbsp avocado oil (substitute with any other oil)
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp coconut sugar (substitute brown sugar or maple syrup)
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt

Chocolate Coating

  • 1 cup dark chocolate (or semi-sweet or milk chocolate)
  • Flaky sea salt for garnish

Instructions

  1. Toss Chickpeas: In a mixing bowl, combine the drained and rinsed chickpeas with avocado oil, coconut sugar, and sea salt. Toss well until the chickpeas are evenly coated with the mixture.
  2. Air Fry Chickpeas: Spread the coated chickpeas in a single layer inside the basket of your air fryer. Cook at 400°F (204°C) for 10 minutes until the chickpeas become crispy, shaking the basket halfway if needed for even cooking.
  3. Melt Chocolate: While the chickpeas are cooking, melt the dark chocolate using a double boiler or microwave. If microwaving, heat in 10-second increments, stirring between each until smooth and glossy.
  4. Coat Chickpeas: Transfer the hot, crispy chickpeas to a clean bowl and pour the melted chocolate over them. Toss well to completely coat each chickpea with the chocolate.
  5. Freeze to Set: Spread the chocolate-coated chickpeas in a single layer onto a parchment-lined pan. Sprinkle flaky sea salt over the top as garnish. Place in the freezer and chill for about 30 minutes until the chocolate is fully set.
  6. Serve: Once the chocolate has hardened, break the bark into pieces and enjoy your crunchy chocolate chickpea snack.

Notes

  • You can substitute avocado oil with olive oil or any neutral oil you prefer.
  • Adjust the sweetness by using brown sugar or maple syrup in place of coconut sugar.
  • Use your choice of chocolate—dark, semi-sweet, or milk chocolate all work well.
  • If you don’t have an air fryer, you can roast the chickpeas in an oven at 400°F for 15-20 minutes, stirring halfway.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge to keep the chocolate from melting.
  • Make sure the chickpeas are completely dry before tossing in oil to ensure optimal crispiness.
